The cable car leaves from the old quarter of Funchal to the village of Monte where you can visit tropical/botanical gardens and the Church of Our lady of Monte, where the tomb of the last Austro-Hungarian Emperor Charles I can be found. Monte is also where you can take the famous Monte sledge ride back down the hill towards Funchal. However, the route is now much shortened from the original and is very expensive.
